What Is Traditional Astrology?

Traditional astrology refers to the techniques and methods practiced from ancient times through the Renaissance—before the "psychological" turn of the 20th century.

It's the astrology of Ptolemy in 2nd-century Alexandria, of William Lilly advising clients in 17th-century London, of Nostradamus making predictions that are still studied today.

These aren't vague horoscopes. Traditional astrology provides specific, predictive, and actionable insights. It answers concrete questions: When should I launch my business? Will this relationship last? What's coming in my Saturn Return?

"The most complete system of astrology ever written in English."

The Ancient Masters

The foundation of everything we practice

c. 100-170 AD

Claudius Ptolemy

The Foundation

"The ancient authority that all later astrologers built upon."

Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos ("Four Books") is the oldest complete astrological textbook in existence. Written in 2nd-century Alexandria, it established the fundamental concepts that would define Western astrology for 2,000 years:

  • The planets, signs, and houses
  • Essential dignities (planetary strength)
  • The doctrine of aspects
  • The connection between celestial and terrestrial events

When we cast your chart, we're using techniques Ptolemy documented nearly two millennia ago.

c. 120-175 AD

Vettius Valens

The Practitioner

"The most extensive surviving text of ancient astrology."

While Ptolemy gave us the theory, Valens gave us the practice. His Anthologies—nine books of chart examples and interpretations— show how astrology actually worked in the ancient world.

Valens documented timing techniques, predictive methods, and real case studies that were lost for centuries. His work was only translated into English in the 1990s, making these authentic ancient techniques available again.

1089-1167

Abraham Ibn Ezra

The Bridge

"The bridge between Arabic and European astrological wisdom."

A medieval Jewish scholar who translated and synthesized Arabic astrological texts for European audiences. His work preserved knowledge that might have been lost during the Crusades.

Ibn Ezra's clear, systematic approach made astrology accessible to educated Europeans—and his influence can be traced through Renaissance astrology and into the techniques we use today.

The Renaissance Masters

The golden age of English astrology

1602-1681

William Lilly

Father of Modern Horary Astrology

"Christian Astrology (1647) remains the most complete system of astrology ever written in English."

William Lilly was the most famous astrologer in 17th-century England. His clients included politicians, merchants, and nobility. When the English Civil War broke out, both Royalists and Parliamentarians consulted him.

His textbook, Christian Astrology, is still the standard reference for traditional techniques:

  • Horary astrology—answering specific questions from a chart cast for the moment
  • Natal astrology—interpreting birth charts using traditional methods
  • Electional astrology—choosing the best times to begin ventures
  • Event interpretation—reading the astrological signatures of historical moments

Why he matters today: Serious astrologers still study Lilly's methods. His techniques for reading birth charts, predicting transits, and answering horary questions have been tested by 375 years of practice.

Nostradamus

The Prophet

"History's most famous astrologer, predictions still studied today."

Michel de Nostredame used traditional astrology to make the predictions that made him legendary. His methodology—rooted in ancient techniques—produced forecasts people still analyze.

John Dee

The Scholar

Mathematician, astronomer, and astrologer to Queen Elizabeth I. Dee selected her coronation date using electional astrology—a chart that proved auspicious as her reign became the Golden Age.

1552-1599

Simon Forman

The Doctor

The most popular medical astrologer in Elizabethan London. His casebooks—thousands of client consultations—survive as the largest record of practical astrology from the period.

The Modern Recovery

For 300 years, these techniques were buried. Then a group of scholars decided to recover them.

The "Enlightenment" dismissed astrology as superstition. The knowledge didn't disappear entirely—Lilly's book stayed in print—but the understanding of how to use it faded.

In the 1990s, Project Hindsight began translating ancient astrological texts. Led by Robert Hand, the project brought Valens, Ptolemy, and dozens of other ancient authors into English for the first time.

"Robert Hand has translated more ancient astrological texts than anyone alive."

— When ancient manuscripts reveal their secrets, Hand is the one who decodes them

Today, traditional astrology is experiencing a renaissance. Practitioners are rediscovering techniques that produced results for millennia— techniques validated by history, not just hope.

Practicing traditional astrology with techniques passed down from Ptolemy to Lilly—and now, to you.

I came to astrology not through newspaper horoscopes, but through a fascination with history. How did Renaissance physicians time their treatments? How did medieval merchants choose departure dates? How did ancient priests read the will of the gods in planetary movements?

These weren't superstitions. They were systems—refined over centuries, tested by results. When I discovered that these techniques had been preserved and were being recovered by scholars like Robert Hand and Christopher Warnock, I dedicated myself to learning them properly.

My training: Years of study with traditional astrology masters, including certification in Renaissance electional techniques and horary methodology. I've read Lilly's Christian Astrology cover-to-cover more times than I can count—and I use his methods daily.

"I'm not a psychic. I'm a technician—reading the cosmic weather patterns that have been mapped for 2,000 years."

What I offer isn't mystical guesswork. It's the application of proven techniques to your specific questions and timing needs. Whether you're facing a Saturn Return, choosing a wedding date, or timing an investment—the planets have patterns. My job is to read them accurately.
